Garden Wedding

You have heard me talk a lot about “the garden wedding” in the last few weeks as I have experimented with and shared with you different cupcake recipes.  The wedding was for the son of a good friend of mine.  Her son is also a good buddy of my son Clark – they played Lacrosse together in high school, roomed together their freshman year of college and played college Lacrosse together.  I figured helping with the wedding was good practice for the day that one of my children eventually gets married!

Here is the darling bride and groom – Jordan and Molly.

Molly chose teal blue, lime green, fuchsia and orange as her wedding colors.  Her bouquet was made of bright colored Gerber daisies and she accented her wedding dress with teal accessories.  I loved her shoes!

The wedding was Saturday and it was a great success.  It ended up being one of the hottest days of the year here in Portland!

Garden Wedding Decorations

When I heard what the wedding color scheme was I suggested we use blue mason jars as candle holders and flower vases.  I think they were a perfect choice.

They decorated all the tables as well as hung from the fence, some full of candles, others full of flowers.

They hung photos of the bride and groom growing up as well as a couple on a cute ribbon clothes line with teal and orange clothes pin along the fence too.  People were able to view them as they walked into the reception.

And just in case people were confused about how to get into the backyard we lined the grass with more canning jars, candles and bows!

Despite a last minute ribbon emergency when the hundreds of yards of ribbon that we had ordered didn’t show up, we quickly made a mad ribbon dash all over Portland Friday morning and bought up every roll of teal, lime green, fuchsia and orange ribbon we could find!

We tied bows of brightly colored ribbons on every other chair since we were a bit short on ribbon.

The cupcake bar looked lovely….

We used all my white serving pieces on a white table cloth. I found these fun green vases at Goodwill a while ago and they looked perfect on the cupcake table with a single gerber daisy in them.  Just a punch of color!

Garden Wedding Cupcakes

Lovely Lime Cupcakes were the most popular cupcake of the evening.   And the cream cheese frosting held up great in the heat.

The Banana Cupcakes with cinnamon cream cheese frosting were another big hit.  Everyone loved the frosting on these.

We also served Brown Sugar Cupcakes with Browned Butter Icing.  These were my personal favorite!

Because it was so hot out, I had to change the frosting I used for the Chocolate Cherry Cupcakes.  I used Sara’s  recipe over at Our Best Bites  and it too held up great in the heat!  I used natural cherry extract that I found at Whole Foods instead of vanilla and it worked beautifully.

The final cupcake selection was the Perfect Lemon Cupcakes .  They were yummy but the frosting on these had a hard time in the heat and the strawberries bled on the frosting. They didn’t look very pretty, but they were still delicious!

Garden Wedding Food

When asked what food he would like for the reception the groom, Jordan, suggested that we just throw some burgers on the grill and have some chips and salsa.  Not exactly traditional wedding reception fare but we did accomodate his wishes with a salsa bar.  Complete with three types of salsa and two types of chips.

We opted for Sliders and Sauces rather than full on burgers.  They were a fun addition to the party and everyone loved them.  The groom’s sister made up three different sauces for the sliders that were so yummy.  I will definitely be sharing those recipes with you too!

And of course there was lots of water!  Regular water and “Good” water.  If you have never had “Good” water before you have missed out.  It is made with lemon extract, citric acid and sugar and has a wonderful refreshing lemon flavor.  That recipe will be coming too!!!  Lots to share.

And then just in case anyone was still hungry or hadn’t had enough sweets there was a fun candy bar full of candy in the wedding colors!
Our friend Karen had decorated some darling little boxes for people to take their candy home in.

Even the groom’s little niece fit right in with the color scheme – isn’t she cute!

The groom’s sister added a festive touch of color with an orange flower in her hair.  I wished I’d gotten a picture of her orange flip flops too!

The mother of the groom was happy, the bride and groom were happy.  Their casual, laid back, fun loving style was reflected in the reception.  Everything looked beautiful and tasted yummy and the guests enjoyed themselves – what more could you ask for!

Cali has made me promise that I won’t make any more cupcakes the rest of the summer!  So we are on cupcake hiatus for now!!  Now I just need a nap!

Today is my second post about pretty.

I love it when I walk into a store, usually a small boutique, and it takes my breath away.  Each way I turn there is pretty, pretty, pretty.

This weekend my girls and I had that experience except it was an outdoor boutique – actually a flea market.  My girls and I left the house at 7:15 a.m. Saturday morning.  Now that is quite a sacrifice for two teenage girls but they knew it was worth it.

We arrived at the Barn House up in BattleGround, Washington a little after 8:00 a.m. – the flea market had just opened!

It was one pretty thing after another.  First of all it was a pretty day – a beautiful day!

The first thing that caught my eye was the pretty food!  It was no surprise as there were cupcakes and I have my cupcake radar out these days!

Barn HOuse1 (1)

Not only were the cupcakes pretty but the whole food area was pretty!  Almost too pretty to eat!!

Barn HOuse (1)

After I stopped drooling over all the food we went to check out the vendors.  Each vendor had their own tented area.  Their set ups were a work of art!  One of my favorite vendors is Sparrow.

Barn HOuse1

Yes, that is a bike up there!
Barn HOuse (5)

Every booth was pretty.  So pretty in fact that you almost hated to buy anything because you didn’t want to disrupt the prettiness of it all!  But we didn’t let that stop us.

Barn HOuse (9)

Everywhere we turned – more pretty things!
Barn HOuse (11)

I think I actually learned to type on a typewriter like this one!

Barn HOuse (15)

Wouldn’t these chairs look wonderful in my garden?  Unfortunately they didn’t come home with me.

Barn HOuse (2)

The Barn House sales are held about 4 times a year – the July sale being their biggest and best.

Their next event is August 15th and I plan on being there!  If you are in the Portland/Vancouver area you should check it out!  Let me know if you go, maybe we can meet up there!

Back to the pretty.  I loved this banner!Barn HOuse (8)

Barn HOuse (10)

We did manage to find something fun and pretty to bring home with us – vintage crinolines for the girls!  Won’t they have fun creating pretty outfits with these!

Barn HOuse (14)

I do have one regret though.  Have you ever seen something and totally fallen in love with it?  Then you talk yourself out of it because you really have no idea what you would do with it?  I did that this weekend – I talked myself out of something and now I so regret it.

I can’t stop thinking about it.  I still have no idea what I would do with it but I know it would make me happy every time I looked at it…..sometimes you have to have things just because they are pretty.

I am a big supporter and fan of women run homebased business.  Maybe it’s because I have had some type of homebased business for almost 25 years!

I love to see a woman take a talent. gift or passion for something and discover a way to share it with others and contribute to her family income at the same time!  All while maintaining her first priority of family and being a mom.

It’s even better when I can be a part of it.  When I can offer a few words of advice or a suggestion and be a friend, supporter and cheerleader.

I am a big fan and supporter of Meg.

Meg is a Portland based Portrait Photographer.

megan_elle_logo_1

She has a gift and a passion.  She has the ability to capture beauty and romance through her camera lens.

Tessa33

She sees things that others don’t.  She creates emotion.  She creates beauty.

Tessa23

When she took Tessa’s pictures she helped her feel like a princess.  She captured not only her outer beauty but her inner beauty as well.

Tessa09

She has a gift for using natural light to create amazing effects and images.

Tessa46

Whether she is taking pictures of a newly married couple, a little girl playing in her room, a beautiful rose or pictures of your kitchen  Meg has the ability to capture the emotion of the moment and tell a story with her photos.

If you live in the Portland area and are looking for something more than the traditional (and may I add somewhat boring) studio photographer I hope you will contact Meg.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Be sure and tell her you read about her here at Your Homebased Mom!

Please meet my friend Meg –

When I was a little girl I loved to color pictures for my Dad.  When I would present him with a finished work of art he’d hand it back and invariably say, “Sign it, so everyone will know I have a Megan original!”  I have always been an artist, it wasn’t until recently I was guided to become a photographer.

I love the ability photography has to convey emotion, to tell a story, and to give life to the halls of our memory.  I am primarily self taught but have been blessed with mentors and believers along the way who have given me the confidence to share the beauty I see with others.  To those individuals I am forever grateful.

Megan Elle Photography is my passion, second only to the love I have for my Heavenly Father, His Son, and my dear family.  My work is an extension of self; reflecting my beliefs, my values, and ultimately glorifying God.

Sweet Sixteen

My baby turns sixteen today!

Is that really possible?  It just seems like yesterday I was wishing her a Happy Fifteenth here on the blog!

Turning sixteen is kind of a big deal at our house.  Of course you can drive when are sixteen – except that Tessa hasn’t had her permit long enough so it will be a few months until that happens.

The other big deal is that Tessa  has reached official dating age!  Yikes!  I think she is grateful that her two older brothers aren’t living at home right now but her dad still is!!!

Tessa has her special day all planned out.  Breakfast in bed with overnight waffles  with raspberries and cinnamon syrup.  Shopping and lunch at our favorite pizza place on NW 23rd with mom and sister.  Then dinner at Rockbottom Tavern in downtown Portland.  Food is always a very important part of birthdays around our house!  Somewhere in between all of that eating she plans on squeezing in a movie and a pedicure!

I’m sure there will be some presents included and I’ll be making Pioneer Women’s Strawberry Shortcake Cake for dessert per Tessa’s request!

My beautiful, sweet fourth baby…

TEssa

has become a beautiful and sweet young woman!

Happy Birthday sweet Tessa!!

These beautiful pictures of Tessa were taken by my friend and photographer Meg.  Meg is amazing and I want to introduce her to you but she deserves a post all her own.  By giving her a post of her own I can share even more of the beautiful pictures she took of Tessa!

So please let me introduce Megan Daines of Megan Elle Photography to you.

This past weekend was Rose Festival weekend here in Portland, Oregon.  Portland has the second largest floral parade in the country.

There is a reason why the Rose Festival is held the first part of June  – our roses are crazy beautiful right now!

I thought I would show you the Rose Festival that is going on in my own backyard.  Enjoy!

This is what I see from my office window.

With the few weeks of sun we had the roses are going crazy!

Family Fun

As Jack Johnson says, “It’s always better when we’re together.”

With all the kids home for 10 days we are having lots of FUN at our house this week!

goofy picture

We’ve been enjoying every minute of it and trying to squeeze as much fun in as we can.

Before I share a little of our family fun be sure and check out all the fun we are having over at iLashGirls this month – it’s our Word of the Month – Fun!

We’re talking about how much fun we have blogging!  If you have ever thought about starting a blog and would like some tips and ideas for getting started be sure and check out our Blogging Fun post and contact us through the contact form for more info!

One of our favorite fun things to do at our house is play cards.  Our families favorite card came is Samba, a variation of Canasta.  It was the first card game I learned when I became part of the Wilkes family.  We then taught my side of the family how to play and  now it is our favorite game to play with both sides of the family.

Last Sunday my parents came over for dinner so of course a family game of Samba was a must!

Samba (4) Samba (7)

We played boys against girls.  It got pretty intense at times!Samba

First the girls took the lead, which didn’t make the boys too happy.

Samba (2) Samba (8)

But then the boys took the lead and it didn’t make the girls too happy!
Samba (6) Samba (5)

It was close at the end but the boys won – time for a rematch!!

If you’d like to know how to play Samba check here for directions.  You’ll need three decks of cards!

What’s your favorite family game to play?
