Things to do in Paris Part 2

We discovered that our second day in Paris was a National Holiday.  May 1st is their Labor Day and May Day and just about everything shuts down, museums, restaurants, stores etc.  We had planned a trip out to Monet’s Garden in Giverney but discovered the trains were running on an altered schedule and it would have taken us half the day to get out there.  We decided to push the trip to the next day but we were left without a plan.  Some of the best things happen when you don’t have a plan.

On May 1st the tradition is to give lilles of the valley to people you love so there were lots of vendors on the streets selling flowers.  I love lilly of the valley.  We had them growing in our yard growing up.

May Day = Paris

We were talking with another American who was staying at our hotel about some of the things they had been doing and he told us that we must go to the cemetery.  Going to the cemetery on a vacation, especially one in Paris, is not at the top of my list but it ended up being one of my favorite things we did!  But before we headed to the cemetary we took a trip out to see Sacre Coeur in the Montmartre District.  I had been here before and this is a fun neighborhood to wander around.  Lots of shops, artists and restaurants.  It is also where the famed Moulin Rouge can be found. But on Labor Day nothing was open except for Sacre Coeur so we were able to visit there.  It is a beautiful cathedral.  It is set high up on a hill and has an amazing view of Paris.

Sacre Coeur

You aren’t suppose to take photos inside but I couldn’t help myself and had to sneak one on my phone.  The cathedral is full of amazing mosiac work.

Sacre Coeur

At the bottom of the hill, right before we got back on the metro we discovered this fun Love wall.  It is covered with the words I Love You in dozens and dozens of different languages.  One of the fun things we discovered on our unplanned day!

Love Wall- Paris Day Two

We enjoyed lunch at a little cafe where we had Croque Monsieur and Croque Madame sandwiches.  So yummy!  The Croque Madame has the egg on top.  It is basically a grilled ham and cheese sandwich but the cheese is on the outside of the bread.

We then headed out to the Pere Lachaise Cemetery, the largest cemetery in Paris.  It is the world’s most visited cemetery and  I highly recommend a stop here.  It is an operating cemetery and people are still buried there today. When you enter there is a map that shows you were all the famous people are buried.  So many of them!  We were able to visit the graves of Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Moliere and Jim Morrison.  Others include Charlie Chaplin, Isadora Duncan and many others.  The cemetery is beautiful and we wandered around for several hours.

Cemetary

I kind of fell in love with all the pretty doors on the buildings.

Here is where Chopin was buried.

Chopin's Grave

From there we headed over to the Isle St. Louis which is right near Notre Dame.  One of my favorite ice cream places is there, Berthillon.  So good!!  Don’t miss it.  We did a little shopping and picked up a few scarves for ourselves and gifts.  You can not go to Paris without a scarf or two or three.  Everyone wears one, men and women!

Berthillion Ice Cream

On our way back to our hotel we made another surprise discovery – The Lock Love Bridge right near Notre Dame.

Love Locks

This has become a popular thing in cities throughout Europe.   Sweathearts add a lock to the bridge to symbolize their everlasting love and then toss the keys into the river. Jim went over to a shop across the street and bought a lock for us.  We added our names and date and attached it to the bridge.

Aren’t we romantic!  Except we forgot to toss our keys into the river and then we lost them!

That evening we enjoyed a fondue dinner in the Latin Quarter.  The Latin Quarter is in the 5th Arrondissements (Paris is divided into sections)  and is near the Sorbonne.  This is a fun area where the streets are lined with restaurants, dozens and dozens to choose from.  We decided to enjoy a fondue dinner.

The next day we headed to Giverney.  That day deserves its own post tomorrow.

Our final day in Paris we decided to just wander the city and enjoy our last moments in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We even slept in a bit but not too much because I told the family – “you can sleep when you get home, we’re in Paris!!”

I had heard wonderful things about Ste. Chapelle so I knew I couldn’t leave Paris without a visit.  My friends were so right!  It is tucked away next to the Palace de la Citie,  just around the corner from Notre Dame and it is easy to miss.

Ste. Chapelle

It is a medieval Gothic Chapel and it is breath taking. It is a small chapel in comparison to some of the cathedrals we saw but so beautiful.  It is floor to ceiling stain glass and literally takes your breath away when you step into the chapel.

Ste. Chapelle

Truly amazing!  We stood in line for about an hour to visit but it was worth every minute.  We also found some very fun and interesting people to visit with while we waited in line.

Ste. Chapelle

Our next stop was the Musee d’Orsay, my favorite museum in Paris.  It has a wonderful collection of Impressionists, including my favorite, Monet.

Musee d'Orsay

The museum is an old converted train station so the architecture is really interesting

Musee d'Orsay

Here’s another travel tip for you.  Always carry a  book with you.  We ended up standing in line at the museum as well as several other places and between that and all the train/metro travel you can get some pretty good reading time in.  Tessa was reading Matilda before her study abroad program started as that was one of the shows they were seeing.

There was usually a bit of this going on too – trying to figure out where we were going and where we were!
We had to enjoy some more crepes again and then took a stroll through the Luxembourg Gardens and Palace.  It is the second largest park in Paris and spending a little time there can almost make you feel like a local!

Luxembourg Gardens

In front of the palace is a fountain.  You can rent these darling little sail boats to sail.

We couldn’t leave Paris without trying the famous Angelina’s Chocolat Chaud (hot chocolate).  Fortunately for us there was an Angelina’s just around the corner from the gardens.  It was like drinking a melted candy bar!

Then we decided for our last meal in Paris we would enjoy a sidewalk cafe for the last time.  It was a great choice.  We sat across from the gardens and just enjoyed people watching.

Day Five - Paris Day Four

We had our own paparazzi (aka Jim) across the street taking photos.

Paris Street Cafe

We enjoyed some more of that onion soup, a yummy bread and cheese platter  and some sandwiches.  (They eat a lot of sandwiches in England and France.  Of course, in France they are on a baguette!)

We then sadly headed back to the train station to get our train back to London.  Although how can you really be sad going to London.

Things to do in Paris

I love Paris.  I love everything about Paris.  The buildings, the food, the language  and the whole feel of the place.  And despite popular belief I have not found the French people to be overly rude.  They don’t smile a lot but I only encountered one “rude” French man, a surly security guard, while we were there.

We spent four days in Paris and the surrounding area. Today’s post covers our first day.  We move quick and fast!

After our first day in  London we took the Eurostar over to Paris and arrived mid-morning.  We dropped off our bags at the hotel and headed straight for this beauty!

Eiffel TowerHe is big!!!  If you are going to visit the Eiffel Tower I highly recommend you read the book Eiffel’s Tower by Jill Jonnes before you go.  So interesting to know the history behind it. Be prepared to wait in line to go to the top.  It is possible to purchase advance tickets but since we didn’t know exactly when we were going to be there we didn’t do that but if you can plan ahead it will save you time.

Day Two - Paris Day One

Of course we went to the top for one of the best views in Paris!

View from the Eiffel Tower

It was a cold and windy day but of course we had to get the jumping photo!

Eiffel TowerFrom the Eiffel Tower we headed over to the Arc de Triomphe, an amazing monument.  It is located near the west end of the Champs-Elysees, right in the middle of a very busy road and you have to cross the street underneath in a tunnel!

Arc de Triomphe

The monument honors those who died and fought for France in the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars.

Arc de Triomphe

Arc de Triomphe

We continued down the Champs-Elysees and walked by the Place de la Concorde, one of the major public squares in Paris.

Place de la Concorde

Continuing down farther you walk through the Tuileries Gardens where we stopped and gave our tired feet a rest. It is the former site of a French Palace.

Tuileries Gardens paris

If you continue down a bit farther you will come to the Louvre.  We didn’t visit the Louvre this time.  We saw the Mona Lisa on our last visit and I didn’t really have a desire to go back.  The Louvre is so huge and overwhelming I prefer the smaller museums.  A few days later we visited my favorite museum in Paris – the Musee d’Orsay.

From the gardens we headed over to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame

But before we went inside we had to make crepe stop first!  Yum!!!  Nutella is my favorite but I am a big fan of the sugar and lemon too.  Jim enjoyed a ham and cheese crepe.

French Crepe

Notre Dame is 850 years old this year and still as beautiful as ever.

Notre Dame

Notre Dame

Notre Dame

She is even more beautiful at night! On our last visit a few years ago we stood in line and climbed to the top of Notre Dame which I highly recommend.  You get to get out there with the gargoyles and get a lovely view of the city.  See my photos here.

Notre Dame at night

We stayed in the Latin Quarter of Paris so our hotel was not far from Notre Dame and we walked past it several times a day.

I could spend all day wandering around Paris just looking at the buildings.  They are all so pretty!

Paris Building

And where else except Paris would you find an orchestra performing in the metro!

Metro performers in Paris

Of course another one of my favorite things about Paris was the food – especially the pastries and the baked goods!  Jim said the thing he misses most from the trip is our morning stop at the local neighborhood boulangerie/patisserie for our daily quota of baguettes, croissants, pain au chocolat and macarons!  This was one of our favorites – just down the block from our htoel.

French bakery

They didn’t like you taking photos in the bakery but we snuck a few on our phone!  They really don’t do it justice.  We got there right after they opened so all the cases weren’t full yet.

Our first night in Paris we ate at a little cafe just down the block from our hotel.  I enjoyed a bowl of onion soup.  You don’t have to call in French Onion Soup in France!

London

Note:  This is a long post and full of photos (but they are pretty photos!)

Our first stop on our recent European adventures was London. The main reason for our trip was that our youngest daughter was heading to London to do a study abroad program with BYU. I decided I couldn’t possibly send my baby across the ocean unaccompanied so I needed to go with her. Since Cali was graduating from college she needed to go to and she had also lived in London so she could get us everywhere we needed to go easily. And then Jim decided since he had never been to London, he needed to go too! So we all went.

Over the next week or so I will share with you some of our exciting adventures. If you would like a detailed itinerary of where we went, hotels we stayed in etc. I have put one together and you can email me for a copy at yourhomebasedmom@gmail.com Our stops included London, Paris, Giverney, Hampton Court, Canterbury, Dover, Bath and Salisbury.

We arrived in London at 6:30 a.m. on a Monday morning. My best piece of advice in dealing with jet lag is when you arrive in a foreign country just go with whatever time it is. We dropped our luggage off at the hotel and hit the ground running (literally!) We didn’t stop until it was bed time in London. It is amazing how far adrenaline can take you. Our bodies were ready for bed and we slept good and no jet lag!

Today I am excited to share with you the things we saw while in London. We spent two days in London, they weren’t consecutive days but I will share both today. Cali and I had been to London before but Jim and Tessa had not so we had to hit some of the “must sees” with them even though we had seen them before.

We stayed near Paddington Station on Sussex Gardens so we had easy access to the underground and the train system. After dropping off our baggage we jumped on the underground and headed for the Westminster stop. It is a pretty amazing experience when you step out of the underground. It is one of those WOW moments when you are greeted by this handsome guy – Big Ben.

_dsc0073

After a few photos, of course, including a jumping photo, we headed over for the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

Big Ben and Parliament

To get an up close, next to the fence spot you  must arrive an hour before hand.  Changing of the guard begins at 11:00 a.m. and the entire process takes about an hour.

The Queen was in the day we were there!  (the flag was flying)

From there we walked through St. James Park and headed back over to Westminster Abbey.  It is truly breathtaking.

Westminister Abbey

You aren’t allowed to take photos inside but we took lots outside.  Be sure and check out Poet’s Corner in the abbey.  This is of course where Prince William and Princess Kate were married and the funeral of Princess Diana was held.

Our next stop was the Tower of London.  I have been doing a lot of reading on the history of London and England so was anxious to see the spot that has such a bloody and long history.

London Day One
Tower of London

We had a fun and educational tour by one of the Beefeaters.  You may wonder why they are called Beefeaters.  Well, you will have to keep wondering because they don’t even know!

London Bridge

Across the river from The Tower of London is Tower Bridge. We made a quick stop at the British Museum right before they were ready to close for the day.  They have a wonderful exhibit of old, original  manuscripts and papers including Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, Jane Austen, The Canterbury Tales, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Magna Carta and even some Beatle’s song lyrics which made my husband happy.

British Library

On our way back to our hotel we stopped by Kings Cross Station for a photo op at the Platform 9 3/4.  This is a must for any Harry Potter fan.

Platform 9 3/4

We stopped for some fish & chips for dinner and then headed back to our hotel to get some sleep.  A fun and busy day.

Our second day in London started out at Abbey Road.  This was a must see for my Beatle loving husband.  He is a huge fan and can basically tell you which album every Beatle’s song is found on!!

Abbey Road

Just a word of caution,  Abbey Road is a busy street so reenacting the famous Beatle album cover and not getting hit but a car is a bit of a trick!  Walk fast!!!

I loved the graffiti wall nearby with all the Beatle lyrics.

Abbey Road

It was then a trip to one of my favorite parts of London – Nottingham and the Portobello Road market which is only open on Saturdays.    It is a cross between a Farmer’s Market, flea market and antique market.  It rained on us while we were there so I didn’t get many pictures.  We did manage to enjoy some yummy food including this delicious bruschetta!

Portobello Road Market

We also loved these very Beatle-esque street performers.

Portobello Road Market

We made a fun purchase at one of the antique stores – a 19th century painting.  Love it so much!!  Thanks Jim 🙂

We were a little wet but still going strong.  One of the things Cali and Jim really wanted to do was go to a British football (soccer game)  Since the tier one team games are very, very expensive we went down to the second tier and attended a Fulham Football game at Craven Cottage.  British fans are very intense!  I was a little nervous when we got off the train and the entire route to the stadium (which was about 1/4 mile or so) was lined with police man or Bobbies as they call them in London!  The fans were quite intense but all was well and we enjoyed the game although I must admit I did sleep through part of it.  I was tired!! Let me tell you, when you can sleep through the very loud, obnoxious fans you are tired!!!

One of our favorite things to do in London is go to the theater.  London Theater is more reasonably priced then here in the states and there are so many shows to see!  Cali picked the show Ghost at the Wimbledon Theater. Before the show we enjoyed a traditional English pub dinner with bangers and mash and more fish and chips.  If you have seen the movie Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, this is the same story.  It was a good show.  I didn’t fall asleep during the show!

My best tip – is learn to master the Underground fast.  It can get you anywhere you want to go.  For more tips and info on the Underground check out my Top Ten Travel Tips Post.

Fried Mac and Cheese

fried-mac-cheese-5

Any weight or excessive calorie intake that may occur from today’s post can be blamed on a couple of my friends.  They are the ones responsible for introducing me to Cheesecake Factory’s Fried Mac and Cheese.  Have you tried it?

Yes, it is all their fault!  Don’t blame me but be sure and head over to I Heart Naptime to check out the recipe.  It’s amazing and I don’t really even like mac & cheese!!!

The jet lag is almost gone.  Instead of waking up at midnight I am now waking up at 4 a.m.  I can handle that!

While we were in Utah for Cali’s graduation I had my whole family in one place.  That happens less and less these days unfortunately!  I had to take advantage of the opportunity and have some family photos taken and plan ahead for our Christmas card since the next time we will all be together may not be until Christmas!

Since we were going to be there for Cali’s graduation from Brigham Young University I wanted to do the family photos on the school campus.  My husband and I both graduated from BYU, that is where we met.  All of our children have attended BYU and 3 of the four have now graduated from there as has our daughter in law.  Both Clark and Jessica are attending BYU law school and Tessa is a sophomore at BYU so I guess you could say we bleed blue (BYU’s color)  So of course that had to be the starting point for the color scheme for our photo and the location.

We chose the older end of campus where there are a couple of lovely old buildings for the backdrop to our photo.  I used our favorite Utah photographer – Tara B Photography.  She always is able to capture just what I am looking for.  She has done great work for us before including this family photo shoot, Clark & Jessica’s engagements and a 50’s Housewife shoot for me!

This next photo is one of my favorites.  You may initially look at it and think, “Logan, get off your phone, you are ruining the picture!”  But I am so grateful that Tara got this photo.  She was able to capture a very special moment in time.

You see, Logan had just received a text letting him know that a man he had baptized in Argentina was now serving as a Branch President of one of the Branches down there.  An amazing thing.

A touching and special moment that is now preserved for us!  Thank you Tara!!!

One of my favorite photos is of my five kids!

Many of you know that I spent 20 years in the direct sales industry.  I truly believe it is the best job a mother can have.  I was able to lead a team of over 700 women, support my family financially and earn personal satisfaction and recognition all while being home with my kids!  I was recently contacted by a USANA, a direct sales company and asked if I would write an article for their blog on my experience of being a mom with a successful direct sales business and to share any tips I might have with their readers.  I must say it was fun to put that hat on again and share some of my thoughts and ideas with them.

I’d love it if you’d like to check out the article I wrote in which I share the Success Formula I used during those 20 years.  The concepts I share can really be applied to anything  in life.  If there is a goal you are working towards these tips can help you there too.   And if you know someone in direct sales please feel free to share the link with them!

Here’s my Success Formula.  Go on over to the USANA blog to read more about it and what it means!
